1984 Tayana 55

The Tayana 55 is a 55-foot fiberglass cruising yacht built in 1984 by Ta Yang Yacht Building Company of Taiwan. Designed by Dutch naval architect Pieter Beeldsnijder, she combines classic offshore aesthetics with modern underbody performance—a fin keel, skeg-hung rudder, and balanced sail plan that marked a departure from heavier traditional designs. Powered by a 130-horsepower Perkins diesel engine with direct drive and a MaxProp three-blade propeller, she cruises at 7.5 knots with a maximum speed of 9 knots. The cutter rig—carrying 120% genoa, staysail, mainsail with three reef points, and spinnaker options—offers versatility across a range of conditions and suits self-steering and short-handed sailing. Her protected center cockpit provides excellent visibility and security underway.

Below deck, the layout centers around a spacious main salon with teak cabinetry and a navigation station to port. The galley, upgraded in 2011 with granite counters, includes a Grunert refrigeration system with holding plates and a Village Marine freshwater maker rated at 400 gallons per day. Three cabins and three heads accommodate extended cruising: a forward starboard cabin with lower and upper berths, a forward port cabin with double berth and head, and a generous owner's stateroom aft with centerline queen berth, ensuite head and shower, and settee. Extensive storage surrounds the master cabin. The well-equipped navigation station includes redundant GPS and radar units, VHF and SSB radios, autopilots, and integrated chart plotting.

The deck structure was rebuilt in 2001 with 5/8-inch bonded teak planking and reconditioned in 2021. Standing rigging was replaced in 2021 with heavy-duty stainless steel featuring mechanical terminals. A full suit of sails—main, jib, and staysail—dates from 2023, along with spare tri-radial spinnakers. Twelve Lewmar winches handle sail trim, and lazy jacks assist in sail management. The cockpit extends over 8 feet and is protected by a 2021 Bimini and 2022 dodger with windshield covers.

The engine room offers standing headroom and excellent access to the Perkins engine, which has been comprehensively serviced and documented. An Onan 8-kilowatt generator supplies electrical power, backed by an 8-bank house battery system totaling 1,000 amp hours and a 200-amp-hour start battery. The inverter system includes a 2,000-watt Xantrex unit plus a spare. Two outboard engines—a 2012 9.9-horsepower Mercury and a 2000 15-horsepower Yamaha—are mounted on the stern rail. The yacht features air conditioning, heating, hot water, a scuba tank compressor, and an eight-person life raft. Extensive spare parts and system documentation accompany the boat.
