The 1985 Lancer 40 Motorsailer is a rare pilothouse design built with twin Perkins diesel engines and the flexibility to cruise under sail or power. Only two of this model were constructed, featuring distinctive design elements including an inside helm station, transom arch for enhanced power performance, and boomless roller-furling main. The boat reaches approximately 11 knots at maximum speed, with a cruising speed around 7 knots.
The pilothouse layout defines the interior, with a raised salon, large windows, and protected helm creating a bright, practical living space finished in warm teak. The forward owner's cabin includes a walk-around berth accessible from both sides, while the head compartment is unusually spacious with a ceramic sink and fully enclosed shower. Storage throughout the boat is abundant, with cabinetry and lockers thoughtfully integrated into the design to support extended stays aboard. The galley is well equipped with a solid-surface countertop, deep stainless steel sink, electric induction cooktop, convection oven, microwave, and a refrigerator/freezer capable of operating on both 12V and 120V power. A 16,000 BTU reverse-cycle air conditioning system provides cooling and heating.
Recent upgrades include a redesigned helm station, rebuilt original gauges, replaced 12V and 120V electrical systems and LED lighting throughout, resealed windows, replacement of all three bilge pumps, mahogany wainscot paneling in the main salon, Raptor epoxy non-skid deck coating with two-tone epoxy-painted decks, newer sails, and a bottom job completed in May 2026. Both engines have new starters, relays, alternators, and impellers. The port transmission was professionally rebuilt in 2024, and the starboard transmission was professionally serviced and inspected at the same time. Running rigging has been replaced, and standing rigging has been inspected.
The boat carries substantial tankage: 140 gallons freshwater, 260 gallons fuel across three tanks, and 30 gallons blackwater capacity. Deck equipment includes an aluminum mast, Harken foresail furler and mainsail furling system, Maxwell Nilsson windlass, stainless bow rail and stanchions, double lifelines, and molded swim platform. The shoal-draft wing keel features encapsulated lead-shot ballast.
