Destiny is a 1987 custom sloop-cutter designed by Charles Wittholz and built with modern materials and traditional craftsmanship. At 49 feet with a 14-foot beam, she combines classic cruising character with contemporary engineering. The centerboard design draws just 5 feet when raised and 9 feet 4 inches when down, providing shallow-water access to the Bahamas and Intracoastal while maintaining the seaworthiness for offshore passages.
The hull is cedar strip planking over laminated mahogany frames, edge-fastened and epoxy encapsulated for strength and longevity. The deck is plywood with teak overlay. This modern wooden construction was recognized in Wooden Boat magazine for its clean execution and contemporary building techniques—many assume the boat is fiberglass rather than wood. The design prioritizes durability and practical maintenance over the demands typically associated with traditional wooden yachts.
Below deck, the layout emphasizes open, usable space. An L-shaped saloon, dedicated navigator's station, full-width forward stateroom, and large lazarette provide room for cruising supplies and extended time aboard. Three-level teak-and-holly sole work runs throughout, with light-toned woods and quality joinery creating a bright interior. The 14-foot beam makes the accommodations feel notably spacious for entertaining and live-aboard use.
Power comes from an 85-horsepower Perkins diesel with a fully feathering three-blade propeller, showing just over 3,200 hours. The cutter rig carries 514 square feet of mainsail with three deep reefs and 1,108 square feet total sail area, with the masthead set at 63 feet to clear ICW bridges. Cruising systems include refrigeration with freezer, propane stove and oven, separate shower, water heater, solar panels, Starlink, inverters, and AGM battery banks—all configured for comfortable extended cruising and coastal living.
