This 1987 Irwin 38 center cockpit is a fiberglass sailing yacht built for cruising comfort and seaworthiness. The hull features a copper-coated bottom sanded to 400-grit, while the topsides have been wet-sanded to 4000-grit to remove oxidation. A 2022 survey found normal moisture readings throughout the hull and deck with no significant voids or delamination detected. The boat was hauled out in October 2023 and shows cosmetic wear consistent with its age, with minor crazing limited to deck striping.
The interior layout reflects the Irwin's design philosophy of generous volume and practical arrangement for extended cruising. Both heads have been replaced—the aft cabin head in 2017 and the forward cabin head in 2021. An Isotherm refrigerator installed in 2022 provides cold storage, while a Mermaid 16,000 BTU air-conditioning and heating system added in 2021 offers climate control, though the compressor has a minor leak but remains serviceable.
The Yanmar diesel engine runs with approximately 3,000 hours and has received substantial mechanical attention. The lift pump and injectors were replaced, engine mounts installed in 2018, and shift cables renewed in 2021. The shaft and engine are properly aligned, and the lower rudder bearing has been upgraded with a PYI seal. The windlass was rebuilt in 2018, and the bow and starboard side deck were rebuilt after previous installation issues.
Standing and running rigging were completely refit in 2018 with new wire standing rigging, new running rigging, mast wiring, and spreader lights with leather boots. The mast and boom received Awl-Grip refinishing at that time. Two sails are included: a Quantum mainsail with luff sleeves and lazy jacks, and a Doyle 115% genoa, both in serviceable condition. Electronics include B&G instruments and autopilot with hydraulic ram, an Air Breeze wind generator, MasterVolt battery charger, and a 3,000-watt inverter. Canvas work is in excellent condition throughout.
