The Liberty 39 is a 1987 fiberglass trawler built to a classic pilothouse motorsailer design, engineered for extended cruising and comfortable liveaboard living. Her hull combines traditional construction with practical durability: hand-laid fiberglass with substantial layering—twenty to twenty-four plies at the keel for strength—and insulated above the waterline with balsa core for temperature and noise control. The teak decks were replaced with new half-inch teak in 2004. A 66 horsepower Yanmar turbocharged diesel mounted amidships drives the boat efficiently, with an engine room positioned beneath the pilothouse for accessible maintenance. The boat cruises at 7 knots with a range of nearly 500 nautical miles.
Below, the warm teak and oak interior reveals generous joinery and solid wood throughout. The pilothouse provides all-weather helm with opening windows and a port-side helm station with folding chair; a nav station to starboard doubles as a pilot berth, and removable table seating aft serves the pilothouse or can be set on deck. The salon features a large dining table with seating for six. An owner's stateroom aft holds a centerline queen berth and dressing area, with private access to an enclosed head featuring an electric flush toilet and separate shower. A U-shaped galley to starboard includes a Force 10 propane stove and oven, deep stainless sinks, and extensive counter and storage space.
Systems reflect thoughtful cruising fit-out: Nova Kool 12v refrigerator and Seaward water heater, Espar diesel cabin heater, Gobius holding tank monitor, and dual propane tanks with solenoid control. Electrical comprises 12v DC and 120v AC distribution, four Lifeline house batteries, a Magnum inverter/charger, and 30 amp shore power. Navigation and steering include Raymarine chartplotter and tridata, Robertson autopilot and rudder indicator, and bronze wheels at both pilothouse and aft helm stations. The Yanmar shows 1911 hours and is equipped with a Balmar high-output alternator and dripless shaft seal. Deck gear includes a Maxwell Nilsson electric capstan, Forfjord anchor with 300 feet of chain, and bronze running lights.
