The Shannon 28 is a classic cruising cutter built in 1988 with a fiberglass hull and designed for extended offshore passages. Just over 28 feet on deck with a 9-foot-6-inch beam, this boat combines robust construction with thoughtful accommodations. The hull was laid up using NPG-iso gel coat and vinylester outer skin laminates, with a PVC foam-cored deck—a superior choice that resists water absorption. As the final Shannon 28 built, she received custom cabinetry and finishing throughout.
The interior is appointed in varnished teak and white laminates in Herreshoff style, creating a bright and spacious feel across one cabin. Forward, split anchor lockers lead to V-berths with storage, a large hatch with solar vent, and superior ventilation. The main saloon features port and starboard settee berths that extend with alcove foot sections to create two full-size sleeping areas. A custom slide-out chart table on the starboard side serves navigation and galley functions, while a drop-leaf teak table accommodates dining without blocking cabin movement. An enclosed head with marine toilet, holding tank, and waste treatment system sits aft on the port side, alongside a hanging locker. The well-equipped galley on starboard includes a deep sink with hot and cold pressure water, a brand-new gimbaled two-burner CNG range with oven, and a heavily insulated ice chest with SeaFrost refrigeration. Six bronze opening ports and interior LED lighting throughout keep the cabin bright and well-ventilated. Headroom reaches 6 feet 3 inches.
The mechanical systems have been extensively refreshed. A new Yanmar 3 cylinder diesel engine with less than 100 hours was installed in 2025, paired with a rebuilt transmission and new cutlass bearing. Fresh water cooling, a Racor fuel filter, and an Espar diesel heating system support extended cruising. Four AGM house and start batteries—replaced in 2024—feed the 12-volt DC and 110-volt AC systems. A new electric bilge pump with auto/manual control was installed in 2025. Tanks include 60 gallons of fresh water, 20 gallons of fuel, and 20 gallons of holding capacity. Navigation and deck lighting received new LED fixtures in 2025.
The rigging and sail plan are contemporary and well-maintained. A keel-stepped aluminum mast with single spreaders carries stainless steel standing rigging and Harken roller furling systems for both jib and staysail. The sail inventory includes a full-batten mainsail with two reef points, staysail, Yankee jib, drifter with ATM sock, and a 120% genoa—all serviced and inspected in 2025. An electric Ideal windlass with foot switch handles the ground tackle: a 25-pound Manson Supreme anchor with 40 feet of chain and 250 feet of rode, plus Bruce and Fortress anchors as backups.
