1989 Blue Seas Out Island Explorer

The 1989 Blue Seas 31 Out Island Explorer is a fiberglass downeast cruiser built for serious coastal work and extended passages. Measuring 31 feet with an 11-foot beam, it combines a solid hull design with practical accommodations suited to life aboard. The boat is powered by a single 220-horsepower Cummins diesel engine, selected for reliability and efficiency on longer voyages.

The layout centers on a spacious cockpit and cabin with galley, head, and sleeping berths arranged for comfort during extended cruising. Recent work has addressed both the living spaces and core systems: new headliner, cushions, and carpet refresh the cabin interior, while a new freshwater head with macerator and 40-gallon holding tank replaced the original seawater system. A new overhead hatch in the V-berth adds light and ventilation.

The 2020 refit removed the flybridge and second helm station, stripping and repainting the hardtop with non-skid surface. New electronics were installed throughout, including a Reactor 40 mechanical autopilot, Garmin GMR Fantom 18 radar, Garmin GPS 1242xvs touchscreen, new VHF radio, and Fusion audio system. A bow thruster with helm controller was added in 2022 for improved maneuvering.

Engine and mechanical systems have seen comprehensive updates: 2019 work included new fuel lines, belts, impeller, and battery charger with a Reverso oil change system. A new Accutech propeller and R&R windlass were installed in 2021 and 2022 respectively. The Cummins received a 1000-hour service in 2022, and batteries were replaced again in 2024.
