The Sou'wester 51 is a composite-hulled cruising yacht built by Hinckley with a design that balances performance and comfort. Her centerboard and spade rudder allow access to shallow-draft anchorages while maintaining excellent maneuverability. A triple-spreader aluminum mast with Navtec rod standing rigging and a furling boom support a North mainsail and genoa, both from 2018. The Westerbeke 70-horsepower diesel engine with approximately 3,850 hours drives a folding propeller and has been recently serviced with a rebuilt hydraulic backstay adjuster and new removable inner forestay.
The two-cabin, two-head layout centers on a full-beam saloon with U-shaped port settee and straight starboard settee, a drop-leaf dining table, and a dedicated navigation station. The aft stateroom features a double berth with filler to create a V-berth, private access to a head with shower, and cedar-lined hanging locker. Forward is a full-beam cabin with its own en-suite head including separate shower stall. The galley spans the centerline with a three-burner Force 10 propane stove, separate refrigerator and freezer, microwave, and extensive storage. Interior finishes include satin cherry varnish, teak and holly cabin sole, and white paneled overhead with cherry batons. Espar diesel heating and reverse-cycle marine air conditioning condition the interior.
The deck showcases varnished teak toe rails, eyebrow, and handrails, along with four teak-framed opening hatches with updated lenses. Stainless steel bow and stern pulpits, stanchions, and lifelines with port and starboard gates provide safety infrastructure. Teak protection board for anchor chain, five dorades with varnished boxes, and ten portlights ensure ventilation and natural light. The cockpit features a teak coaming cap, Edson pedestal steering, recessed engine control panel, and teak drop-leaf table. A stainless steel dodger with elkhide-covered handrails and sun awning complement the cockpit setup.
Recent upgrades include new hull paint with double white boot stripe and gold cove stripe applied in 2020, standing rigging replaced in 2021, new three AGM house batteries and Xantrex charger-inverter in 2025, and hatches lenses refurbished in 2021. Electronics comprise dual Raymarine Axiom chart plotters, four ST60 displays, ST6002 autopilot with X30 controller, 4-kilowatt digital radar, and Raymarine AIS transceiver, paired with backup Garmin chartplotter and Standard Horizon VHF systems. The boat carries manual and electric winches throughout—Barient and Lewmar—plus a 12-volt Muir windlass with 60-pound CQR anchor and secondary Fortress anchor. Two diesel-heated water tanks provide 260 gallons total capacity, and dual fuel tanks hold 120 gallons. Safety equipment includes EPIR
