1989 J Boats J/40

This 1989 J/40 is a fiberglass offshore cruiser-racer built by J Boats, the 40-foot design combining performance-oriented hull form with practical cruising capability. The boat features a responsive, seaworthy design proven in major offshore races including the Newport-Bermuda and Chicago-Mackinac events. A single Yanmar diesel engine producing 40 horsepower provides auxiliary propulsion, with a cruising speed of 7.8 knots under power.

The accommodations include two private cabins, dual heads, and a galley arranged for comfortable extended cruising. The deck layout emphasizes efficient sail handling and visibility, with a responsive helm and straightforward rigging for single-handed or shorthanded sailing when desired.

Recent work addresses both systems and running gear. The Yanmar engine was installed in 2001. Between 2022 and 2025, upgrades included a new propeller, Raymarine wireless instruments for wind and boat speed with depth sounder, GPS chartplotter at the helm, renewed running rigging, new house and starting batteries, a fresh dodger and mainsail cover, and new cockpit speakers integrated with the stereo radio and CD player. Additional equipment aboard includes a helm cover, cockpit cushions, bosun's chair, docking lines, fenders, tools, spare parts, and manuals for the boat and all systems.
