The Catana 40S is a lightweight, performance-oriented cruising catamaran designed by Lock Crowther. At just 4.2 tonnes displacement, this 40-foot hull combines the ability to achieve strong sailing speeds with genuine ocean-crossing comfort. Twin 36 hp Volvo diesel engines provide auxiliary power, with a cruising speed of 6 knots and maximum speed of 8 knots. The fiberglass construction spans a 19.4-foot beam, delivering the spacious, stable platform characteristic of the design.
Between 2022 and 2024, the boat underwent substantial refitting. Structural reinforcements were made to the mast foot, davit supports, and hull-nacelle joints. The stainless steel rigging was replaced entirely, and both the mast and boom were fully reconditioned. New induction cooktop installed in 2021. Mattresses and cushions in the saloon and cockpit were replaced in 2023. A custom Airex hard top now covers the cockpit alongside an extended aft platform with fishing prep station.
Energy systems were completely modernized in 2023 with 1,520 watts of solar generation via four panels and an 850 Ah lithium battery bank managed by full Victron controls including MPPT controllers and 375W and 3000W inverters. A Seawater Pro desalination unit producing 70 litres per hour was added in 2024, supported by rainwater collection through the hard top. These systems enable extended self-sufficient cruising.
Below decks, three cabins accommodate cruising—two doubles and one single—with a saloon featuring a modular table that converts to additional berth space. Workshop and storage areas support extended voyages. The galley includes a 12V fridge-freezer, three-burner gas stove, induction cooktop, and 7kg washing machine. An Airex tender of 2.8 metres with a 9.8 hp Suzuki outboard is carried on davits.
