This 1994 Pilot Schooner Leopard is a 61-foot wooden sailing yacht built on the design of early 19th-century Virginia pilot boats. The gaff-rigged schooner carries 2,000 square feet of working sail across overlapping lug foresail, jib, self-tending staysail, and fisherman and jackyard topsails. A shoal-bodied centerboard hull with 15,000 pounds of lead ballast—split between keel box and internal placement—gives the design its combination of shallow draft and stability. The yacht displaces 42,000 pounds light and can carry 10,000 pounds of cargo in its 500-cubic-foot hold.
Power comes from an 85-horsepower Perkins 4-236 diesel mounted under the bridge deck with a Hurth V-drive. Water capacity is 300 gallons, fuel capacity 75 gallons, and an ice hold preserves up to 400 pounds for five to six weeks. The boat was configured as a working vessel with accommodations designed to sleep ten. The master cabin sits aft, while forward is a navigation station and office space with desk, drafting table, computer station, chart storage, and file cabinets.
The boat requires work on its plumbing and electrical systems. The rigging also needs attention. It is offered in its current condition.
