The 1995 Able 44 is a downeast express cruiser built by Able Marine in Northeast Harbor, Maine, as one of only five in the Wolf class designed by Chuck Paine. The boat combines striking traditional styling with proven performance, featuring a gleaming Flag Blue hull complemented by extensive varnished mahogany and teak brightwork on the exterior, including toe rails, handrails, seats, windshield frame, and transom.
Twin Volvo diesel engines producing 960 horsepower drive the yacht to a cruising speed of 24 knots with effortless performance; she planes readily at 16 knots. The pilothouse offers excellent visibility with custom low-emissivity tinted glass windows. Deck layout prioritizes sociability with a large cockpit and protected bridge deck featuring substantial seating for entertaining, while a tall mast was removed to improve sightlines and reduce motion at speed.
The interior accommodates couples and families with a single cabin, head with an oversized shower stall, galley, and convertible salon table. Cherry raised-panel cabinetry throughout reflects a comprehensive interior refresh from original Herreshoff-style joinery. A custom Dyer sailing dinghy hangs from teak davits.
Recent maintenance includes 1000-hour engine service completed in early 2024 prior to successful transit from Norfolk to the South Coast. In 2022, the deck house and all external surfaces were ground down, re-fiberglassed where needed, and re-gelcoated; the bottom received barrier coating, and all bronze ports were re-chromed. A 2024 refit added new holding tank system, water heater, and Lumishore underwater lighting. Navigation systems include Garmin electronics suite with GPS plotter, radar, VHF, and autopilot. Bow and stern thrusters with side-hold function provide precise maneuvering.
