1996 Custom Maxi One Design Grand Mistral

This 1996 Custom Maxi One Design Grand Mistral is an 80-foot composite racing yacht redesigned for extended ocean cruising. Built by Mistral Composite to Bruce Farr's iconic design, the hull combines Kevlar and epoxy construction with carbon reinforcement, paired with a full carbon rig and 2022 Evolution Sails. A 130-horsepower Volvo Penta diesel engine powers the boat, which cruises at 8.5 knots and reaches 7 knots maximum under power.

The deck layout prioritizes shorthanded sailing with electric winches, a bow thruster, retractable dodger, and carbon swing swim platform. Fresh teak covers the deck, and the boat features an intuitive layout for handling with minimal crew. Below, three cabins accommodate an owner's double with private en-suite aft, two single cabins, and two heads. A large saloon, well-equipped galley with substantial refrigeration, dedicated workshop, and separate laundry room support extended voyages.

Systems include twin generators, a 200-liter-per-hour watermaker, Webasto diesel heating, and a full 2025 Simrad navigation suite with a comprehensive offshore safety package. The boat carries a 2023 AB 12-foot aluminum RIB with 20-horsepower Yamaha outboard, wing foil, windsurfing, scuba gear, air compressor, fishing equipment, and a professional sailmaker's sewing machine.

Between 2010 and 2023, the boat underwent comprehensive refitting. Under sail in trade winds, she achieves 250–300 nautical mile days at 10–12 knot averages, with top speeds of 24 knots downwind. Reaching and downwind she sustains 16–17 knots; upwind she delivers power at 25 degrees apparent wind angle in light conditions.
