MANDATE is a 1996 Tayana 58 built for serious cruising with enough size and systems that a couple can handle her offshore. The boat has been maintained consistently and upgraded thoughtfully over time. The dark blue Awlgrip hull, teak decks replaced in 2010, and recent additions including a water heater in 2025 and icemaker in 2024 reflect captain-level care. An 11 hp Side-Power bow thruster and updated propane locker gear support her ease of handling.
The layout works well for extended cruising with guests. Three staterooms and two heads sleep up to eight: a forward VB cabin with centerline double, port guest cabin with double bunks, and aft owner's cabin with centerline queen, good storage, and ensuite head. The main saloon features a dining area to port with expandable teak table and a starboard settee that converts to a double berth. Satin teak joinery, teak-and-holly sole, and classic Tayana interiors create a warm, livable cruising environment. The galley runs along the passageway with double stainless sinks, four-burner propane stove with oven and broiler, microwave, trash compactor, refrigerator and freezer, and separate drink locker. A Splendide washer/dryer sits aft in the owner's area. Air conditioning and heat are installed.
On deck, the boat carries the features that ease short-handed sailing: sugar-scoop transom, expandable passerelle, stainless gates, nine Lewmar opening hatches, five stainless dorades, freshwater washdown, and remote windlass controls. The sail plan includes Leisure Furl in-boom mainsail furling, Doyle furling genoa and staysail, Profurl furlers, hydraulic backstay tensioner, hydraulic boom vang, and four Lewmar electric winches—all set up to reduce crew demands.
Navigation and electrical systems support serious cruising: ST7000 autopilot, Raymarine digital radar and 12-inch cockpit MFD, Garmin chartplotter at the helm, SITEX 12-inch MFD at the nav station, laptop navigation setup, ST60 instruments, updated ST70 wind in 2022, VHF, SSB, 8 kW Northern Lights generator, approximately 950 amp-hours of AGM battery capacity, and 2,500-watt inverter. Power comes from a single 140 hp Yanmar diesel.
