The Tartan 3800 is a 38-foot fiberglass sailing yacht built in 1997, representing the builder's most accomplished period of design and construction. Known for thoughtful detailing that balances handling ease with aesthetic appeal, this model performs equally well under sail alone, in mixed cruising, or in competitive racing. The hull is powered by a Yamoto diesel engine of 38 horsepower, sufficient for auxiliary propulsion and maneuvering.
The deck layout centers on a modern sugar scoop transom and T-shaped cockpit fitted with a 48-inch wheel, offering good visibility and control whether sailed from the windward or leeward rail. The rig is set up for both short-handed operation—with lazy jacks on the mainsail, self-tailing primary and secondary winches positioned near the helm, aft-led furling lines, and autopilot—and for racing, with extra inboard genoa tracks and a carbon spinnaker pole. Teak toe rails and cabin handrails complement white gel coat topsides, while navy blue cove and boot stripes and navy canvas add traditional, sharp styling throughout.
Recent upgrades include a new bottom finish, updated running rigging, and a new hydraulic backstay adjuster. The white gel coat topsides remain in excellent condition. Over its 25-year history with three owners in New England, the yacht has been maintained by respected regional yards, with numerous other improvements and additions made throughout that period.
