1998 J Boats J/120

The 1998 J/120 is a 40-foot fiberglass racing and cruising sloop powered by a 38-horsepower Beta diesel engine with a three-blade Max-Prop. Built by J Composites in Rhode Island, the boat underwent extensive refit work between 2020 and 2024, including a new engine and propeller in 2023, complete rod rigging replacement in 2024, keel fairing, and a fresh Baltoplate bottom. The standing rigging is new, the running rigging has been substantially replaced, and the hull received topsides paint in a two-part epoxy system. The boat carries a full inshore and offshore racing sail inventory and is equipped with modern NKE electronics, autopilot, and navigation systems throughout.

Below decks, the two-stateroom layout sleeps six across a forward V-berth cabin, quarter-berth stateroom, and salon settees. The forward cabin includes a head with hanging locker opposite. The main salon features veneered bulkheads, a removable drop-leaf table, and linear settees with outboard storage on both sides. An L-shaped galley to port holds a two-burner LPG stove with oven, refrigeration, and double-basin sink. To starboard sits a forward-facing navigation station with hinged table and storage. The quarter-berth aft includes a long berth with hull-side shelf, hanging locker, and two ports plus a hatch for ventilation. Storage throughout is well above average for the size and performance class.

The electrical system includes a Victron battery charger, Lifeline deep-cycle battery, Xantrex inverter-charger, Balmar high-output alternator with external regulator, and flexible solar panels. A Victron charge controller manages the system. The auxiliary machinery features a Wallas diesel heater, Isotherm refrigeration, Force 10 stove, composting head, and automatic bilge pump installed in 2024. A Maxwell electric windlass with remote and emergency rudder system complete the setup. The boat carries two anchors with appropriate chain and rode.

The rig consists of a Hall aluminum mast inspected and tuned in 2024, with all rod rigging newly replaced. Six Harken winches were rebuilt in 2021. The mainsheet, genoa sheets, and spinnaker sheets are recent Ballard Sails replacements. The sail plan includes a UK X-Drive main, multiple genoas and jibs, dedicated cruising sails, and a full spinnaker inventory. Deck hardware has been upgraded progressively, including traveler blocks, lifeline gates, and a rigid boom vang. An EPIRB is aboard, and the boat holds current PHRF and ORC certificates.
