This 2003 Rare Chatam 60 is an integral aluminum sailing yacht built to the designs of Gilbert Caroff. The hull is constructed from 16mm aluminum and measures 59 feet in length with a 17-foot beam. Designed for extended cruising in cold waters, the boat features a closed and insulated wheelhouse, twin Yanmar diesel engines of 75 horsepower each, and a shallow draft suitable for anchoring in minimal water depths.
The yacht underwent a comprehensive refit at the AFEP shipyard in La Rochelle in 2017, including construction of the insulated wheelhouse, installation of a diesel heating system with Eberspacher heating and a Dickinson stove, electrical system overhaul, generator, and watermaker. The sail plan comprises a 115 square meter genoa on a Harken roller, a 30 square meter auto-tacking staysail on roller gear, and a 70 square meter battened mainsail, all in Tarot dacron. The mast is a Marechal spar with 26 meters air draft. Recent work includes replacement of the staysail forestay in 2025, genoa forestay in 2025, and new lazy bag in 2024.
Below deck, the yacht offers three cabins and six heads. The aft cabin and two forward cabins feature berths with storage, each with a desk. Two heads include showers. The saloon has a raised table with exterior views, a galley with a two-burner cooker and oven installed in 2023, refrigeration, and washer in the forward workshop space. Heating throughout includes convectors and blower radiators in cabins and heads.
Electronics include dual Simrad autopilots, Furuno radar, Furuno color sounder with 19-inch display, AIS transceiver, Starlink satellite internet with 50GB subscription, Iridium telephone, and navigational display. Power comes from four 12-volt and two 24-volt service batteries, supplemented by two solar panels. Additional equipment includes a 7.2kVA Beta generator, 90L/hour watermaker, 1000-liter fuel and water tanks in stainless steel, electric winches, bow thruster, and a 5-person Whaly rigid tender with a 6hp Tohatsu outboard.
