The Amel 54 is a full-displacement ketch built in 2006 with a reputation for safety and seaworthiness across long passages. At just over 56 feet with a beam of 15 feet, the hull employs hand-laid fiberglass construction laminated as one piece with the deck, reinforced by four watertight bulkheads. A full-length skeg supports the rudder, which is mounted on solid stainless steel and attached at three points. The conservative sail plan—1,507 square feet total—and hull shape deliver comfortable cruising at good speeds; the boat logged 9 knots effortlessly in 16-knot beam seas with a chop. A 110-horsepower Volvo D3 engine with approximately 3,100 hours provides auxiliary power, and an 11-horsepower bow thruster aids docking.
The cockpit sits behind a hard windshield and custom hard dodger, offering full protection at the helm. Push-button controls manage all systems from this station. Electric furling for both main and genoa, electric winches, and hydraulic assist for storage access reduce the physical demands of daily operation. A Webasto diesel heater and 24-volt fans maintain comfort in heavy weather, while air conditioning cools the interior during warm climates.
The mahogany-and-leather interior reflects traditional cruising yacht design. The galley is fully equipped with a four-burner stovetop, oven, and backup induction plate; three separate refrigeration units; a dishwasher; dual stainless steel sinks; and Corian countertops. A water maker and 900-liter freshwater tank support extended passagemaking, along with 900 liters of fuel capacity and two 90-liter black-water tanks. Lee cloths and large volume stowage—including a cavernous lazarette—suit serious ocean voyaging. A transom swim platform with hot shower and high-mounted dinghy davits with solar arch complete the setup. Comprehensive safety gear and extensive spare parts are onboard.
