The Glaz is a 50-foot gaff-rigged schooner built in 2010 using a hybrid construction method that combines traditional wooden shipbuilding with modern materials. Her hull is strip-planked and cold-molded in epoxy, constructed from yellow meranti and Philippine mahogany, then fully encapsulated in fiberglass for durability. She features carbon fiber masts and a boom designed by composite specialist Julian Smith, making her both strong and light. The design derives from a proven blue-water schooner that crossed oceans, scaled down to create a manageable yacht that can be single-handed.
Power comes from a Kubota diesel engine rated at 52 horsepower, paired with a modern gearbox and a feathering propeller. The boat carries substantial fuel and water capacity, with 650 liters each for diesel and fresh water. A 5-kilowatt genset provides shore-independent power, supported by banks of service batteries and a watermaker for extended cruising. Navigation and autopilot systems include GPS, plotter, depth sounder, and wind instrumentation, all integrated into a modern electrical setup with LED lighting throughout.
Below deck, accommodations include two cabins finished in Philippine mahogany, a separate bathroom with shower, a galley with four-burner stove and oven, and a refrigerator-freezer. The main cabin is paneled and painted white. Sails total approximately 215 square meters of laminate across the main, fore, staysail, and asymmetric configuration, all from Hydes Sail. Rigging uses Dyneema and Dynex materials throughout, with bronze and stainless steel hardware including multiple self-tailing winches and an electric anchor winch.
The boat includes a 3-meter epoxy sailing tender with a 2.5 hp Yamaha outboard, lifted aboard by davits. A full safety package is onboard along with extensive ground tackle—110 meters of chain, 100 meters of mooring rope, and two anchors.
