The Alajuela 38 is a modern blue-water cruising yacht based on William Atkin's classic Ingrid 38 design and further refined by naval architect Ed Joy. Built as a fiberglass hull in 1974 but completed and first launched in 2016, this double-ender combines traditional seakeeping qualities with contemporary materials and smart design. Powered by a low-hour Yanmar 4JHSE 48 hp diesel engine with a Maxprop feathering prop, the boat is equipped for serious offshore sailing with a comprehensive suite of navigation electronics, Monitor self-steering windvane, and extensive ground tackle including three substantial anchors and twin bow rollers.
The interior layout prioritizes functionality and accessibility for a cruising couple. Belowdecks features an open main salon with opposing settees flanking a teak table, a dedicated V-berth cabin forward with excellent ventilation, a galley to starboard with stainless steel countertops and top-loading refrigerator, and a head-shower compartment to port. The engine compartment is accessible via a removable companionway bifold door, with a Bauer dive tank compressor mounted inside. Storage is abundant throughout, and the interior is finished in off-white with dark wooden trim, bronze portlights, and stainless steel overhead hatches.
A major bottom refurbishment was undertaken in 2024 following discovery of osmotic blistering. The hull was professionally peeled twice, re-glassed with 1808 fiberglass and vinylester resin, epoxy coated, and finished with hard coat and ablative bottom paint. All through-hulls were replaced and wired to a new grounding plate. Additionally, fore and aft hatches were removed and re-bedded, and new windlass foot switches installed. The sails—mainsail, jib, staysail, storm jib, riding sail, and cruising spinnaker—are all from 2016-2017 and show minimal use. The boat carries recent electrical upgrades including new AGM house and engine batteries installed in October 2025, plus a new Mastervolt charger. A Dyer Dow Midget 8-foot sailing dinghy with Honda 2 hp outboard is available for separate purchase.
