The Balance 502 is a 50-foot composite catamaran built around a philosophy of performance and ocean-ready capability. Engineered as an evolution of Balance's award-winning lineup, this model introduces Carbon Core construction—carbon bulkheads, cabin soles, daggerboards, rudders, and structural elements that reduce weight, increase stiffness, and improve structural integrity without compromising payload capacity for serious blue-water cruising. The hull carries a larger sail plan than its predecessor, with a main of 95.6 m², a self-tacking jib of 39.3 m², and the option of asymmetric and code D sails for varied conditions. Deep daggerboards allow pointing seven degrees higher than most catamarans while maintaining boatspeed; with the right breeze, the 502 averages 8 to 9 knots upwind and reaches 18 to 20 knots downwind.
The design prioritizes both performance and everyday livability. The cockpit features a VersaStern folding transom that provides security offshore while allowing open access at dock, eliminating the need for washboards or stern screens. The VersaHelm pivot station—a Balance innovation offering 90-degree rotation—now delivers four-corner visibility from an extended platform. New stacking glass doors connect the helm, cockpit, and galley with improved flow; mullion-free windows and expanded overhead hatches maximize natural light and ventilation throughout.
Below decks, the owner-version layout combines luxury with passage-making practicality. Headroom is generous throughout, with a U-shaped galley designed for ocean voyaging, a navigation station that functions as a modern workstation with integrated charging, a convertible salon table that becomes a queen berth, and a spa-inspired master shower. Real-wood storage and frameless cabinetry define the interior aesthetic.
Propulsion options include dual Yanmar 4JH45 45 hp diesels or the hybrid VersaDrive configuration—dual 45 hp Yarmars paired with up to 30 kW of electric drive and a 36 kWh 48V lithium battery bank. The hybrid setup reduces fuel consumption by up to 25% while enabling charging at up to 15 kW per engine; combined with optional solar capacity of 3,000 W, the 502 functions as an advanced off-the-grid cruising platform. Fuel capacity is 800 liters, fresh water 780 liters.
