1920 Herreshoff 12.5
About This Yacht
This 1920 Herreshoff 12.5 is an original wooden hull from the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company's production run, built in Bristol, Rhode Island. Hull #843 is one of 364 boats constructed between 1914 and 1943, and holds particular significance as one of only three hulls selected in 1972 to establish the lines and measurements for the Doughdish molds, making it foundational to the class's development. The classic gaff-rigged sloop carries a 140-square-foot sail plan of mainsail and jib, with white cedar planking over steam-bent oak frames and bronze hardware throughout.
Recent maintenance has been substantial. The brightwork was completed in 2025, and the hull received an epoxy bottom in 2022. The standing and running rigging are new from 2021, as are the sails. A full Thurston mooring cover was fitted in 2021 and refurbished in 2025. Custom cockpit seat cushions are installed. A roadworthy trailer, unregistered, is included with the boat.
The Herreshoff 12.5 is recognized as one of the finest small sailboat designs ever produced—stable, forgiving, and accommodating enough for four or readily handled single-handed. This example has been maintained within full class rules and carries a proven race record.
