This 72-foot Ferry Custom is a 1938 auto ferry converted to a full-time residence. Originally built to transport vehicles across the Columbia River at The Dalles, she later served as the auto ferry for Herron Island from 1960 to 1989. The hull is wooden construction, powered by two Cummins diesel engines producing 340 horsepower combined, with dual propellers and rudders for strong maneuverability. She cruises at 8 knots with a maximum speed of 10 knots.
The interior spans approximately 2,350 square feet across six cabin spaces, with three full heads. The main saloon is a generous 14 by 35 feet, combining living and dining areas with room to spare. The captain's cabin features a walk-in closet and multiple windows. The galley includes a six-burner gas range, commercial-sized refrigerator, freezer, and pantry. Decking totals roughly 2,520 square feet, with a hot tub on the rear deck.
The boat is equipped with a 500-pound Danforth anchor and hydraulic winch, desalinator, generator, and inverter system. These systems allow comfortable living whether anchored or underway. The beam measures 40 feet at the main deck. A recent haul-out and marine survey have been completed. The boat remains fully operational and has been actively cruised throughout Puget Sound, Lake Washington, the San Juan Islands, and Hood Canal by the current owners.
