Zephyrus III is a 1960 Kettenburg K-40, hull number 11 of only 40 ever built. The K-40 was designed by Paul Kettenburg as an enlarged version of his acclaimed K-38 and introduced in 1959 as a boat intended to be sailed comfortably by two people while competing at the front of the fleet offshore. She is planked in Philippine mahogany over steam-bent oak frames with a 5,000-pound lead keel. The masthead sloop carries 631 square feet of sail on spruce spars and is powered by a Yanmar 3GM diesel engine of 27 horsepower with 450 hours of running time.
The boat has been continuously maintained and upgraded over nearly three decades. Between 1997 and 2004, she underwent a thorough refit that included full hull wooding, professional frame replacement, complete re-caulking and epoxy treatment, interior rebuild with new mahogany salon floor, new electrical system, new standing rigging, and new sails. A second major restoration phase from 2014 to 2016 involved mast re-wooding and refinishing, complete re-rigging, installation of a Pro Furl roller-reefing system, new fuel tank, and additional frame replacement. In July 2023, she underwent a comprehensive yard period.
Her construction remains sound and her systems current. The interior includes a rebuilt salon, galley, and head. Electronics include Raymarine systems and an Icom VHF. She carries a full boat cover and skirt.
