1971 American Marine Alaskan 49

The 1971 American Marine Alaskan 49 is a classic wooden pilothouse trawler with substantial presence and traditional Pacific Northwest character. At 53 feet overall with a 16-foot beam, she displaces approximately 30 tons and combines a raised pilothouse, wide side decks, large foredeck, and covered aft cockpit. Her warm varnished wood interior and proper ship-like proportions make her practical for extended cruising while retaining distinctive appeal.

Accommodations include three cabins and two heads. The master cabin features an ensuite head, while a V-berth cabin and bunk cabin provide additional berths. The bright pilothouse offers excellent visibility, the salon features large windows, and the galley is fully equipped with a home-style refrigerator/freezer, stove, oven, and outdoor grill. A diesel furnace provides heating, and full camper enclosure protects the aft cockpit. Fresh water capacity is approximately 400 gallons; fuel capacity totals 1,100 gallons across four tanks.

Power comes from twin John Deere 4045TFM marine diesel engines installed in 2005, currently showing approximately 3,500 hours. The boat cruises around 8–9 knots at roughly 1,650 RPM with reported fuel consumption near 3.5 gallons per hour. Recent work includes a 2024 diesel service, new hull and bottom paint in winter 2025, propeller protection coating applied in 2025, roof recoating with fiberglass in winter 2025, transom restoration, and steering recently redone. Interior updates include a 1,200Ah lithium house bank, new pilothouse and galley wood ceiling, and galley upholstery, all completed in 2024.

Electronics include Furuno chartplotter, depth sounder, GPS, and VHF radio, plus AIS receive capability, weather station, Starlink, and engine room monitoring. Electrical systems feature a 30A isolation transformer, Xantrex inverter/charger, and backup camera. A Boston Whaler 13 Sport tender with Tohatsu outboard, davit system with wireless remote, life raft, and immersion suits are included.
