1977 Custom Reseach & Multi-Role Support

This 370-foot steel research vessel was built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Japan in 1977. Classed with Bureau Veritas and rated for ice operations, it has served extensively in Antarctic waters. The yacht displaces 7,107 tons and is powered by two Marries KmR6 diesel engines delivering 5,998 horsepower combined, geared to a single controllable-pitch propeller. Maximum speed reaches 12 knots, with a cruising speed of 10 knots and an extended range of 15,000 nautical miles. Both bow and stern thrusters provide enhanced maneuverability in confined waters and ice.

The yacht accommodates up to 138 people—44 crew and 94 passengers. Officers and crew occupy single-berth cabins, while passenger spaces include two single-berth cabins, six double-berth cabins, eighteen four-berth cabins, and three VIP cabins sleeping two to four. Common areas feature upper and lower passenger lounges, a library, fitness center, and laundry facilities. The vessel maintains a hospital with surgical capacity and is fully air-conditioned and heated for polar operations.

Extensive scientific infrastructure defines the vessel's capability. It houses numerous laboratories and scientific offices, with a helicopter hangar accommodating two large aircraft and a spare landing deck forward. The 88-ton aviation fuel bunker supports sustained helicopter operations. Working areas include an enclosed poop deck, hydraulic A-frame with 5 and 12-ton load points, and a vertical sliding stern gate. Deck equipment comprises a 25-ton forecastle crane and a 5-ton traveling deck crane. Multiple echo sounders and oceanographic winches support research operations.

Cargo capacity reaches 4,072 cubic meters for grain or 3,687 cubic meters for bales, with 491 cubic meters of cargo oil storage. Three cargo hatches serve tween decks and lower holds. Safety systems include lifeboats and inflatable rescue craft, CO2 fire suppression for machinery and cargo spaces, foam monitors for flight and cargo decks, and a cross-flooding system for damaged stability.
