1978 Herreshoff 50

A 1978 Herreshoff 50, designed by Herreshoff and Gary Hoyt, represents classic offshore cruising design in fiberglass. The ketch rig offers excellent balance and manageable sail plans for extended voyaging. At 50 feet overall with a 14-foot beam, the yacht draws 6 feet with the centerboard up or 11 feet down. Power comes from a Cummins 4BT 3.9-M diesel of 150 horsepower, capable of 6.5 knots cruising speed and 11.7 knots at full throttle. Fuel capacity of 300 gallons and water capacity of 250 gallons support long-range passages.

The interior consists of two cabins accommodating seven to eight berths, with two heads and one shower. The salon features a teak table and upholstered seating overlooking a generous 12-by-15-foot center cockpit. The galley includes a three-burner stove with oven, double sink, wood countertops, and a 5.5-cubic-foot refrigerator with freezer. Throughout, the boat is finished in teak with wood flooring.

Recent maintenance and refits include a resurfaced and repainted hull bottom, rebuilt rudder, replaced zinc anodes, and two new thru-hulls. The steering system was overhauled and the backstay replaced. Halyards and lines are new; sails have been patched, reinforced, and re-sewn. Plumbing upgrades include an aft head replacement, cleaned water tanks with new hoses, and a drinking water pump replacement. New batteries were installed and the electrical panel partially rewired. Cushions were reupholstered and two hatches resealed.

Navigation and communication equipment includes Raymarine GPS, depth sounder, wind instruments, autopilot, and radar, plus VHF radio. The yacht carries six 100-watt solar panels, a Honda EU2000i generator, and a Victron battery system with monitor and inverter. The rig includes eleven winches, main, jib, and both symmetrical and asymmetrical spinnakers. A custom hard dodger and bimini provide weather protection. An included 2024 AB Inflatables Lammina 9.5 dinghy with a 2024 Mercury 25-horsepower outboard serves as tender.
