The Ocean Winds 33 is a 1979 fiberglass catamaran designed by Pat Patterson and built by Symon's Boatyard in Plymouth, England. This 33-foot boat with a 16-foot beam was designed for serious cruising and has proven itself capable: the original owner followed Sir Francis Drake's circumnavigation route via the Magellan Straits, a voyage documented in the onboard book "In The Wake Of Drake". The shallow draft and compact dimensions make the boat accessible to anchorages and marinas that larger yachts cannot reach, while the catamaran hull provides stability and interior volume surprising for its size. The boat is rigged as a cutter with a full-batten mainsail, hank-on staysail, and genoa on rotary furler, with a whisker pole for downwind work.
The interior features a two-stateroom layout, with the second cabin convertible to office or workshop space. The galley is well-equipped with a three-burner propane stove and oven, top-loading refrigerator with freezer, microwave, and three deep stainless steel sinks with both pressure freshwater and manual saltwater. The head includes a Groco marine toilet and a separate stainless steel sink. Storage is extensive, with fuel capacity of 300 liters in bladders under the cabin sole and 75 gallons of fresh water similarly positioned. A Yanmar 20-horsepower diesel powers the boat through a Sillette Sonic Cat outdrive rebuilt in 2014.
Recent work includes mast removal and bulkhead reinforcement in May 2024, standing rigging replacement in December 2019, and a complete mast survey with rewiring and new antenna installation in May 2024. The hull received sandblasting to bare fiberglass in 2023, followed by epoxy barrier coat and two coats of Pettit HRT anti-fouling in April 2024. The cabin top and rear deck were repainted with polyurethane topcoat and non-skid texture in May 2024.
The boat carries an impressive inventory of systems and spares. The electrical system includes four 6-volt house batteries, a 1500-watt inverter, 70 amperes of charging capacity through dual solar panels and a wind generator, and comprehensive LED and fluorescent lighting throughout. Navigation equipment includes a Garmin GPS/chartplotter, Autohelm and Navico autopilots, SSB radio, and dual VHF. Safety gear encompasses six fire extinguishers, lifesling, PFDs in multiple types, and comprehensive ground tackle including electric windlass, Manson Supreme and Lewmar Claw anchors with chain and rode. The boat includes an extensive spare-parts inventory covering engine, outdrive, electrical, plumbing, and sailing hardware components, along with a 10-foot folding dinghy with outboard and an 8-foot roll-up inflatable tender.
