This 1980 Bertram 42 Convertible is a classic example of one of the builder's most successful designs. The 42 Convertible earned its reputation among experienced sportfishermen for heavy-weather capability, strong fishability, and solid construction, built on a deep-V hull with 17-degree deadrise. Twin Detroit Diesel 6V92TA engines deliver 435 horsepower each and cruise at 19 knots. The boat weighs approximately 40,000 pounds.
The layout includes two cabins and one head. The saloon is fitted with a Samsung 24-inch smart television and galley appliances including an Optimus Princess stove-oven and microwave. On deck, an open cockpit features a Pompanette Unlimited fighting chair, Lee outriggers with spreaders and center rigger, and a Maxwell vertical capstan windlass.
Navigation and electronics have been substantially upgraded. Current systems include dual Simrad NSS12 fishfinders with chart plotters and Navionics Platinum charts for New Jersey and Delaware, Simrad 4G and 72-nautical-mile open-array radars, Simrad autopilot with NAC-3 computer, ICOM and Standard Horizon VHF radios with AIS capability, and Sitex V200N satellite compass. A Furuno RD33 remote display and Glendinning twin-engine synchronizer are also installed.
Recent maintenance has been comprehensive. Since 2010, work has included a starboard engine rebuild in 2019 with new liners, pistons, bearings, and heads; bottom refinish in 2018 with barrier coats and paint; regular engine heat exchanger servicing with new coolant and impellers; replacement of all sanitation and engine hoses; battery replacements; trim tab and shaft log work; and structural updates including new cockpit walls, cabin doors, and bridge enclosure panels. The owner has maintained the boat since 1994.
