The 1981 Tayana 37 Pilothouse is a fiberglass cruising sailboat built for offshore passage-making and extended liveaboard use. Powered by a 50-horsepower Perkins diesel engine with approximately 2,500 hours of service, it reaches a cruising speed of 6 knots. The boat has been actively cruised for thousands of miles and carries a full suite of modern equipment: a B&G Zeus² chartplotter with 4K radar, Simrad autopilot with wireless remote, Vesper AIS transponder, ICOM SSB radio for long-range communication, and a Standard Horizon VHF with integrated GPS. Navigation self-steering is provided by both a Monitor Windvane and the autopilot system.
The two-cabin, one-head layout offers comfortable accommodation with a custom V-berth mattress and built-in refrigeration. The galley features a Hillerange two-burner propane stove with oven. Power generation relies on 450 watts of solar panels (300W fixed, 150W flexible) managed by a Victron MPPT controller, supplemented by a Honda 2 kW portable generator. A Mastervolt inverter/charger provides 110V power, and an Isotherm water heater supplies hot water. An installed watermaker enables extended offshore cruising independence.
Significant upgrades completed since 2016 include new standing rigging, external bronze chainplates, a Harken Big Boat traveler, Tides Marine mainsail track, and a Lofrans Tigress electric windlass. The through-hull fittings were replaced in 2022, and the bottom received two fresh coats of paint in December 2024. The engine completed a 3,000-hour service with injector nozzles replaced and the high-pressure fuel pump overhauled. A dual Racor 500 fuel filtration system provides engine protection. The sail inventory includes main, genoa on furler, staysail on furler, cruising spinnaker, and storm trysail.
Safety equipment includes an EPIRB, life sling rescue system, emergency tiller, storm shutter, and a recently recertified six-person life raft. Two anchors (33 lb Bruce and 45 lb CQR) connect to 300 feet of new anchor chain installed in 2023. An included Walker Bay 8'10" hard dinghy with a Nissan 8 hp outboard, along with an extensive collection of tools and spare parts, completes the package.
