The Ohlson 38 is a classic ocean racer-cruiser designed by Einer Ohlson and built by Tyler Yachts in England. The design emphasizes a narrow, easily driven hull with excellent directional stability provided by a long keel and separated rudder. The boat is constructed with substantial stringers and solid fiberglass layup in vinyl-ester resin for both hull and decks, with full insulation throughout. The hull design reflects its original late-1960s imperative to move efficiently through water while maintaining seakindly characteristics.
The deck is wide with excellent handholds forward and generous storage in cockpit lockers and a large lazarette. The cockpit is secure and comfortable, with new teak seats and flooring added in 2020. Below decks, the interior has been thoughtfully refined, including a rebuilt owner's cabin in the forepeak and a replaced shower stall with counter and sink. The layout and storage are purpose-built for sea use.
The boat's mechanical systems have been updated with engine mounts, transmission, and PSS seal replaced in 2020, and new electrical panels installed that same year. Current electronics were fitted in 2018 along with new Lewmar Ocean hatches. A fully enclosed Bimini top was added in 2025. A Yanmar diesel engine provides auxiliary power. The boat demonstrates methodical maintenance and refinement over decades of ownership.
