This 1985 Cal 44 is a 44-foot fiberglass cruising sailboat built for long-distance voyaging. The boat combines solid offshore design with a series of practical mechanical and electrical upgrades that support extended time underway. A Yanmar diesel engine replaced the original power plant, and the auxiliary systems have been substantially renewed: Cruisair air-conditioning and heating, SeaFrost refrigeration and freezer, a 820-watt solar array with upgraded charge controller, and a Whisper wind generator all support comfortable cruising. A 24-volt Arturus bow thruster and Ideal anchor windlass with remote control ease handling at close quarters.
Below decks, two cabins and two heads provide accommodation for a cruising family or extended crew. The galley occupies the port side at the base of the companionway and features a three-burner propane stove with oven, double sinks with pressure water and extendable spray, refrigeration, and substantial drawer and locker storage. A microwave and flat-screen television add convenience to daily life aboard.
On deck, the boat carries a comprehensive rig suitable for offshore work. The mast and standing rigging were recently replaced, and the boom comes from a Catalina 46. Sails include a main and genoa on Profurl roller furling. Primary winches are Barient #32 two-speed self-tailers; secondary winches are Lewmar #43 two-speed self-tailers, with a Barient #23 for aft-led lines. A bimini, dodger, and stratoglass-windowed cockpit enclosure provide weather protection. Dual anchors and chain feed to the anchor locker.
Electronics include a Raymarine C120 chartplotter with recent Navionics charts for the East Coast and Bahamas, Raymarine wind and depth instruments, and 24-mile radar. The electrical plant consists of 12-volt and 24-volt systems with lithium house batteries, a 4,000-watt inverter, and shore power connection. An 8-kilowatt Westerbeke diesel generator requires rebuilding, and the bow thruster motor needs replacement.
