This 35-foot Alden Malabar tribute is a fiberglass reinterpretation of a classic John Alden design. Built between 1984 and 1986, the hull was created using the original 1938 mahogany-planked Malabar as a male mold—the boat was stripped, inverted, and cast in hand-laid fiberglass 4 to 6 inches thick at the keel and 1.5 inches at the waterline. The original cast-iron keel was reattached using the original bolts and encapsulated in fiberglass. The yacht carries a single Perkins diesel engine of 48 horsepower.
The interior layout mirrors the original Malabar design with thoughtful updates. The galley was enlarged to fit a larger stainless steel sink and refrigerator-freezer unit. The original centerline folding table was replaced with a U-shaped seating arrangement that converts to a three-quarter double berth. Original mahogany planking salvaged from the 1938 hull and original bronze hanging knees, portholes, and fixtures were incorporated throughout the interior.
The yacht is equipped with a new aluminum twin-spreader mast, standing rigging with Sta-Lok fittings, winches, windlass, and ground tackle, all built to exacting standards. Electrical systems are fully new and upgraded. The diesel engine has been rebuilt. During summer 2025 maintenance, the bottom was repainted, through-hulls were serviced, and new bilge pumps were installed.
