This 50-foot Santa Cruz 50 is a purpose-built ocean racer designed by Bill Lee and constructed in fiberglass. Originally commissioned in 1986, the boat was engineered for single-handed circumnavigation and incorporates custom design features tailored for demanding offshore performance. A Yanmar diesel engine of 27 horsepower provides auxiliary propulsion. The hull carries a water ballast system of 350 gallons, which adds approximately 3,000 pounds of movable ballast to enhance upwind performance.
The boat underwent significant modification during its racing career, including installation of a taller mast and wheel steering. These upgrades were completed as part of a major refit and have been integrated into the current configuration. The design and construction reflect the exacting standards required for solo ocean racing and extended cruising.
This yacht has proven itself capable of sustained offshore performance across thousands of nautical miles. Its engineering and layout make it well-suited to shorthanded sailing operations and long-distance voyaging under varying sea conditions.
