1987 Grand Craft Triple Cockpit Runabout

This 1987 Grand Craft is a 24-foot triple cockpit runabout styled as a faithful replica of a 1930 Chris Craft design, with an upswept deck and mahogany construction above the waterline. The hull draws from original Chris Craft specifications developed by Chris Smith and was built to high standards for Lake Tahoe operation. Power comes from a 340 cubic inch Chrysler Marine V-8 gasoline engine, substantially more capable than anything available in the 1930s era it mimics.

The boat underwent a comprehensive keel-up restoration in 2002. The original planked bottom was replaced below the waterline using WEST system epoxy-bonded marine plywood, while the mahogany plank-and-batten structure above the waterline was retained after inspection found it sound. The hull design was refined during this work: the original straight keel profile was modified to a curved rocker shape to improve stability and performance with the modern engine, and a reverse chine was added forward to manage spray. A new mahogany transom was fitted, and the hull and trailer were painted forest green with white boot topping.

The three cockpits received new black rubber deck matting and upholstery rebuilt with foam cushions and period-correct forest green vinyl in tuck-and-roll style. The original Ivalite searchlight, navigation lights, flagstaffs, and chrome hardware were cleaned and reinstalled. A new electric horn on a mahogany pad, manual/automatic bilge pump, stainless steel handrails over the engine compartment, and fume detector were added. The forward cockpit's mahogany roll-top console was refurbished, restoring the AM/FM radio and tape deck; all four speakers were replaced.

The Chrysler Marine engine and 40-gallon stainless steel fuel tank were inspected and found in excellent condition during restoration. The ignition system was tuned, a new Morse throttle control installed, propeller shaft and related components refitted to match the modified hull, and new batteries and spare propeller obtained. A new fuel filter, hull valve, exhaust fan, and additional systems were installed. The boat has performed reliably since completion and has been maintained by Sierra Boat Co.
