The Laurent Giles Vertue Class is among the most accomplished small cruising designs ever drawn, and this 2010 cold-molded wood example built by craftsman Jack Bassett represents an extraordinary interpretation of that legacy. Constructed from the finest materials—Alaska Yellow Cedar, Spanish Cedar, Iroko, mahogany, and walnut—with West System epoxy and fiberglass sheathing, the hull achieves both strength and elegance. Every detail reflects meticulous work: bronze fastening throughout, teak railings and hatches, stainless steel fittings, and a lead keel with silicon bronze bolts. The interior joinery in cherry and walnut is custom built to match the boat's refined character.
Accommodations center around a compact but well-arranged cabin with single berths to port and starboard, infill cushions and panels for double sleeping at anchor, and generous stowage including bookshelves. The galley includes a Swedish Origo alcohol stove, Blake marine head, and both freshwater and saltwater pumps. LED lighting runs throughout, and Lexan port lights with curtains and hatch screens complete the cabin. Deck space flows logically from the raised cabin house to the open cockpit, with proper ground tackle including a bronze windlass, three anchors, and substantial chain and rode for serious cruising.
The rig is fully appointed for ocean work: a Sitka spruce mast and boom, double spreader configuration with running and standing backstays, and a complete sail inventory by Master Sailmaker Nathaniel Wilson including mainsail with two reefs, genoa, working jib, stays'l, storm stays'l, and trysail. Bronze and stainless steel sheet winches, Wilcox Crittenden halyard winches, and Sta-loc fittings support this system. Navigation equipment includes a Raymarine chartplotter and sounder with spare, AIS transponder, Furuno radar, and a Fleming servo pendulum self-steering system. The 2YM15 Yanmar diesel was installed new in 2020 with 30 hours on the meter, paired with a bronze propeller and single-lever Vetus control.
The boat's condition reflects continuous care and active use: the varnish remains impeccable inside and out, systems and electronics are fully current, and a new nesting dinghy and new EPIRB complete the outfit. Comprehensive safety equipment includes manual and electric bilge pumps, ocean drogue, harnesses, and PFDs. Tankage includes 20 gallons each for diesel and water, with an additional 20-gallon water stowage for offshore work.
