This 2002 Mares 38 catamaran was built in New Zealand and designed for high-performance offshore operation. The hull is fiberglass with an 11-foot-3-inch beam, offering good stability for open-water handling. The boat does not have bottom paint applied.
Power comes from a pair of custom 572 racing engines with Merlin blocks producing 1,500 horsepower total—780 foot-pounds of torque per engine. All major drivetrain components were installed new in 2015: Arneson Surface drives, five-blade Herring surface props, Lathem steering, Gaffrig gauges with bezels, Keif throttles, and Velvet aluminum gear boxes. The system delivers a cruising speed of 48 knots at 2,800 rpm and a top speed near 100 mph. With only 14 hours of running time since the complete engine, drive, and paint work, the powerplant remains essentially unused.
The cabin includes a marine head and sink. Navigation and fish-finding electronics consist of a Garmin Map 182 GPS and Humminbird 160 fishfinder. A Seafire fire suppression system is fitted. Creature comforts include air conditioning, Alpine stereo with power amplifier and subwoofer.
The boat is sold with a custom Rocket triple-axle aluminum trailer fitted with new tires in 2015.
