This 2005 Protector Targa 28 is a fiberglass-hulled sports cruiser built on a design originally developed for the New Zealand Coast Guard. Two Mercury 200hp engines deliver 400 total horsepower and cruise at 30 knots, with a top speed of 40 knots. The boat runs under 300 hours on its 2019 powerplant and carries a SidePower bow thruster for precise maneuvering.
The cabin layout includes one berth and a single head, arranged in a traditional picnic boat configuration that balances day-cruising versatility with overnight capability. The full glass windshield spans the helm, eliminating isinglass at eye level for improved visibility and weather protection. Custom skylights with opening portlights, SeaDek flooring, and LED lighting throughout add practical refinement to the interior.
Navigation and electronics were updated in 2019 and include dual chart plotters, updated radar, AIS, a 15-inch Garmin touchscreen at the helm, and a spotlight. An amplified JL Audio sound system runs through a Fusion stereo. The hull was re-tubed with new hypalon in 2021. Electrical systems were overhauled in 2019 with new batteries, wiring, and a battery charger. The 28-foot beam of 9.5 feet combines seaworthiness with manageable handling.
