The Catalina 12.5 Expo is a small sailing yacht built around ease and accessibility. Its defining feature is the SmartRig system—a rotating carbon fiber mast that eliminates traditional rigging elements like stays, chainplates, and halyards. The deck-stepped mast and boom are removable by hand in minutes without tools, making setup and storage straightforward. The same line that serves as the reefing mechanism also furls the sail completely around the mast for compact storage.
The boat's tapered one-piece carbon fiber mast keeps weight aloft low while allowing good sail power. The Hoyt boom works with the SmartRig to make adjusting sail area effortless. A bench seat spans the cockpit, providing comfortable seating for a crew member or passenger.
Construction follows Catalina's standard methods: a hand-laid fiberglass hull paired with a one-piece fiberglass deck featuring molded-in non-skid. Full internal flotation makes the 12.5 virtually unsinkable. At 12.75 feet long with a 5-foot beam, the boat is sized for straightforward handling and day sailing.
