The 2020 Helmsman Trawlers 38E Pilothouse is a single-stateroom trawler built on a semi-displacement, full-keeled hull with soft chines, a sturdy skeg, and skeg-hung rudder. Powered by a Cummins QSB6.7 diesel engine producing 380 horsepower, the boat reaches a maximum speed of 11 knots. The fiberglass hull and superstructure feature a ceramic coating and are finished in Kingston Gray with a Matterhorn White superstructure. The design emphasizes safety and accessibility: port and starboard pilothouse doors, protective bulwarks, welded handrails, and a wide flybridge stair make movement around deck easy. A hardtop shelters the cockpit, and side entry doors simplify boarding.

The interior centers on a full-beam salon adjoining the galley and dinette, with a separate pilothouse that includes its own dinette and good aft visibility. Two heads serve the boat, with separate master head and shower compartments. Accommodations feature light tan upholstery, Navajo white granite countertops, opening windows throughout with screens, and refined joinery. The pilothouse includes a pilot berth conversion option.

The mechanical and electrical systems prioritize simplicity and proven reliability. The single Cummins engine has approximately 1,500 hours and sits in a roomy, easily serviced engineroom. A Cummins Onan 5-kilowatt generator with about 70 hours powers the boat, supported by four 215-amp-hour house batteries plus separate bow thruster, engine start, and generator start batteries. Power is distributed through Side-Power bow and stern thrusters. A Webasto Airtop 55 diesel heater, Torrid 17-gallon water heater, Force 10 propane range, and NovaKool 9-cubic-foot refrigerator-freezer round out the mechanical outfit.

Exterior features include a flybridge with centerline helm, dual pedestal seats, and L-shaped settee, topped with a retractable bimini that lowers the airdraft below 12 feet. A retractable radar mast, topside boat deck with davit crane, and Lewmar V4 windlass with 200 feet of chain and Rocna anchor complete the boat deck. Garmin navigation electronics, Starlink Mini with detachable mount, and a solar panel system with Victron controller provide communication and power. A Takacat 300 dinghy with electric motor is included.
