The 2022 Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 490 is a 49-foot cruising sailboat built around a hybrid-electric propulsion system designed for quiet, efficient long-range sailing. Rather than a conventional diesel engine, the boat is powered by an OceanVolt ServoProp 15 electric saildrive connected to a 57.6 kWh lithium battery bank. A Fischer Panda 5 kW DC generator serves as a range extender, while 625 watts of solar panels and a Victron inverter and monitoring system manage power. The four-blade variable-pitch propeller supports feathering, reverse thrust, and hydro-regeneration under sail. The propulsion motor has logged only 50 hours.
The boat sleeps six across three cabins and includes two heads. The main salon features air conditioning and reverse-cycle heating, with an additional diesel cabin heater. A full Iverson dodger and bimini enclose the cockpit. The hull is finished in custom Mako Blue Heron. Sail inventory includes a North Sails 3Di Endurance furling main with vertical battens, an Ullman tri-radial genoa, and a Code 0. Electric winches are fitted throughout.
The boat carries premium Raymarine Ocean electronics for navigation and monitoring. The hybrid system integrates solar charging, shore power capability, the DC generator backup, and hydro-regeneration into a single energy management platform supported by Victron controls accessible from remote locations. The propulsion and house systems share the same lithium bank rather than operating separately. The generator and battery pack show minimal use, with only 10 charge cycles recorded.
