The Excess 14 is a 45-foot catamaran built from fiberglass with a distinctive design that blends cruising comfort with dynamic sailing performance. Powered by a single 45-horsepower Yammer diesel engine, the boat features asymmetrical hulls optimized for reduced drag, an extended bridgedeck clearance, and a forward-set rig carrying a square-top mainsail and large overlapping genoa as standard. The helm stations are positioned at the stern with direct steering via textile lines for responsive feel and full visibility of the sails. Untinted windows throughout provide exceptional visibility inside, while the design includes a composite bowsprit, inverted and inclined bows, and a low boom that reduces windage.
The interior is organized around innovative layouts available in both three-cabin and four-cabin configurations. The three-cabin version offers a central bathroom, large private dressing area, and optional extra bunks. The four-cabin layout includes four heads with separate showers, an optional skipper cabin in each hull, and a walk-in dressing room for stowing sailing gear and clothing. Both configurations maintain generous headroom and bright, warm interiors with wide berths in the hulls, bathrooms featuring separate showers, and subdivided storage throughout. A retractable chart table optimizes the living and working spaces without compromise.
The hull design incorporates foam sandwich construction with carbon reinforcements, extended rudder blades, and a lower center of gravity to enhance stability and performance. The boat's architecture was developed in collaboration with VPLP design, drawing on ocean racing expertise to optimize the relationship between sail area and displacement while maintaining the comfort and modularity expected of a cruising catamaran.
