1959 Custom 232' Icebreaker Support Ship
About This Yacht
Built in 1959 at Davie Yards, this 232-foot icebreaker support ship is classed DNV Ice 1A Super for polar operations in heavy ice. The steel hull features reinforced ice-belt plating 1.25 inches thick, giving it the strength to operate in extreme conditions. Four Fairbanks-Morse diesel-electric generator engines deliver 5,332 horsepower, with controllable-pitch electric drive that allows the boat to run on any combination of engines for efficiency based on weather and load. The ship can cruise at 11 knots and reach 14.5 knots maximum, with a continuous bollard pull of 47.5 metric tons.
The deck is equipped for working operations, featuring an 11-metric-ton cargo crane covering the main hatches, two 2.5-metric-ton cranes, a 1.0-meter moon pool, and a 900 cubic-meter cargo hold. A helicopter deck with a telescoping hangar is installed, along with eight inflatable life rafts for 25 persons each and a lifeboat. Full GMDSS communications, dual radars, VSAT, and Iridium systems support all operations.
Accommodations include 36 cabins across the ship: twelve single-berth and twenty-four two-berth cabins, plus three client offices, two crew lounges, and an onboard hospital. Fuel capacity is 700 cubic meters with 128 cubic meters fresh water capacity. The boat has undergone refits in 1985, 2004, and 2022.
