The Mao Ta Skye 51 is a proven offshore cruising design from 1983, built to a Kaufman & Ladd hull that has earned respect among serious bluewater sailors. Her centre cockpit, encapsulated lead keel, and skeg-hung rudder provide confidence for extended passages, while the ketch rig offers versatility and ease of handling for a shorthanded crew. At 51 feet with a 14-foot beam, the boat displaces 38,708 pounds with 15,500 pounds of ballast.
The interior features high-quality teak joinery throughout. The saloon is spacious, with the galley and chart table readily accessible from the companionway, and a large dining table to starboard with port settee. A substantial navigation station to starboard holds additional electronics and electrical controls. The owner's cabin aft includes a private head and separate shower. Forward are a guest cabin with double and fold-down single berths, a guest head, and a forepeak with additional sleeping space or storage. An engine room with excellent access houses key systems including inverters, watermaker, and steering controls. A diesel heater and Force 10 stove with oven support galley operations.
Power comes from a Yanmar 4JH4 TE with 75 horsepower, installed new in 2016 with approximately 3,469 hours; saildrive seals were replaced in 2025. The electrical system includes 1,560 amp-hours of batteries, 600 watts of solar with Victron controllers, a Victron inverter, and a global battery charger. A high-efficiency watermaker, Raymarine autopilot and electronics suite from 2023, Hydrovane windvane, and Starlink connectivity support extended offshore cruising. Deck gear includes a Lofrans windlass, 40-knot Rocna anchor with 330 feet of new chain, and a 2.7-metre AB tender with Yamaha 15 outboard. The boat was last hauled in May 2025 and antifouled in September 2024.
