1987 Nauticat 521

The Nauticat 521 is a 51-foot ketch-rigged staysail cutter built by Siltala Yachts of Finland to Sparkman and Stephens design. Designed for serious blue-water cruising, the yacht combines traditional pilothouse styling with modern systems and safety equipment. The hull is solid fiberglass with a lead keel of 8,000 kg, and the boat displaces approximately 25 tonnes lightship. An in-mast furling mainsail, electrically furled headsail, and two autopilot stations enable single-handed operation, while the ketch rig is favored for offshore work.

Below deck, four cabins provide comfortable accommodation. The forward cabin has a double bed with Froli travel system; the forward bunk cabin offers two narrow bunks; the aft cabin serves as a utility room with laundry and auxiliary fridge; and the master stateroom features a queen bed with Froli system and latex topper. Two heads with macerating toilets, twin showers with hot water, and a large galley with four-burner gimbaled stove and twin sinks are standard. Teak and holly sole boards run throughout. The main saloon features a protected internal helm station to starboard with an expansive U-shaped seating area and dining table, offering 360-degree visibility underway.

Power comes from a Yanmar 4JH4-HTE 110 hp turbo diesel fitted in 2015, currently showing approximately 2,797 hours. Dual fuel tanks hold 1,570 litres total, providing a 2,000-nautical-mile range. A Westerbeke 3-cylinder 8 kW generator, VETUS bow thruster, and 1,565 litres of fresh water storage support extended cruising. Three battery banks with lithium house batteries and robust electrical infrastructure—including 1,350 watts of solar panels, two inverters, and comprehensive 12v and 240v systems—power the yacht independently or from shore power.

A comprehensive 2015 refit renewed major systems and equipment, including the engine, toilets, refrigeration suite, and watermaker. The mast and rigging were renewed in 2021 with Sta Lok components. Full sail inventory includes a North genoa and mainsail, with a symmetrical spinnaker unused. Two inflatable tenders with 15 hp and 6 hp outboards, extensive safety gear including a six-person liferaft serviced in 2024, navigation electronics by Raymarine and Simrad, and substantial deck equipment support extended offshore operations.
