The Tartan 31 is a proven cruiser-racer from 1988, designed by Sparkman & Stephens with a fractional rig that rewards short-handed sailing. Built in fiberglass, she combines a moderate displacement hull with a balanced spade rudder for responsive handling and immediate feedback in any condition. The fractional rig allows easy mainsail depowering without the constraints of a masthead configuration, while her well-proportioned underwater profile delivers strong performance. An 18-horsepower Yanmar diesel provides reliable auxiliary power.
The main cabin feels spacious for her size, with teak joinery and a teak-and-holly cabin sole throughout. A U-shaped galley sits to starboard, with a navigation station opposite to port. Two settees flank a folding table, and the cabin accommodates six sleeping berths across the forward cabin, aft cabin with hanging locker, and convertible seating. A head sits just aft of the forward cabin. Nine opening ports and two deck hatches with screens provide ventilation, while Dorade vents offer additional airflow.
The sail inventory is extensive: North Sails mainsail with reefing, furling genoa, working jib, and 155-percent genoa, plus a gennaker and roller furling gear. Three self-tailing Barient winches handle primary and cabin-top trimming. The rig was replaced in 2022 with new mast wires and external LED lighting. Navigation electronics installed in 2022 include a Ray Marine radar, autopilot, and instruments for speed and depth. VHF radio, binnacle compass, and stereo round out the onboard systems.
Accommodations include a two-burner gimbaled oven, refrigeration, pressurized hot and cold fresh water, a 40-gallon water tank, battery charger, and both manual and electric bilge pumps. The boat is well-equipped with safety gear, anchoring equipment, dock lines, fenders, and a permanent winter storage cover with cradle. Mast rigging was replaced in 2001, and the 2022 upgrades to electronics, lighting, and rig wires reflect recent investment in the boat's systems.
